I will begin by saying that this week’s
research was awful. It was exhausting
trying to find an empirical research article about school finance deficits in
California. I spent at least four hours
searching for an empirical article. However,
I changed my research question this
week; I felt like it would help me in broadening the focus of my research.
My new question: What are the major causes of financial deficit in California’s public
school system and what are some of the effects?
Looking for empirical articles, there were
very few that had anything to do with my topic. However, I found one that had
to do with the effects of financial deficits in schools. It introduced an idea
to me that qualified teachers are not equally distributed, because they like to
work where they are paid a fair amount for their qualifications. It makes perfect sense, but I never thought of
that before. It makes me think more about what schools would be like if they
all had the funding for qualified teachers.
I feel like my research skills are developing
very well. I am getting used to using databases and doing searches with
specific limitations that I have set. I think the problem that I am running
into most is that I am not getting a lot of results, because my topic is
slightly specific. Because I am not getting a lot of results, I did not find
any other publications that interested me.
I can completely agree with you that searching for an empirical research can be frustrating and taxing mentally. The fact that you decided to revise your question after four hours of searching was a smart move as it can increase your chances of finding more empirical studies especially making your research a little more interesting. It's fascinating to read your new question has narrowed down your idea, but you could broaden your databases by looking into the business disciplinary which could give you better results for empirical articles. Did the article you choose have any data such as hypothesis, and a type of statistical model showing the results of your research?
ReplyDeleteCassidy,
ReplyDeleteI was on the same boat as you with finding an appropriate article for this weeks assignment. At some point I had to take a break because I was too frustrated.I think that you changing your topic is going to help with the research you will continue to search for in these next few weeks. I must say that I have thought about changing mine, but I feel like I can look a little further to find what I need because I feel a little passionate towards my topic. Do you think that opening up your research to a more general topic might help you find more results, or is it something you feel passionate about as well and chose to stick through it?
